Students Taking Alternative Routes to Success
The S.T.A.R.S. program was developed for students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade that are exhibiting challenging behaviors in their general or special education classrooms significant enough to warrant a more structured learning environment. These students are unable to continue placement in their home schools with existing support and are in need of a curriculum focusing on social and anger management skills. The S.T.A.R.S. program offers the curriculum and develops the environment needed to address these goals within their home school or another building within their home district. The Arc offers both support for families and directs students toward support from other appropriate local agencies.  As students demonstrate more self-control they are transitioned back to their home schools as determined by the reintegration process.
The S.T.A.R.S. Program is a collaborative effort between the school district and The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter, NYSARC.
 Goals of S.T.A.R.S. Program
To provide a structured and safe environment where students can learn social and self-control skills that will enable them to eventually transition back to their home schools
Smaller class size focused on strengthening and supporting academic success, building self-esteem, and forming better relationships
Students will maintain enrollment within their home school district and have the opportunity to still interact, to a limited extent, with peers and administrators, so that positive behavior and improvement can be observed by all
