StageWorkssub

StageWorks, The Arc's Theater Arts program, serves 50 - 60 individuals with developmental disabilities and has been in operation for 10 years. Of this group, approximately 40 individuals are directly involved in StageWorks theater production. Another 10-15 individuals from The Arc's day programs will be involved in the design and construction of props and sets for performances. In an effort to provide integrated arts programming, StageWorks is also open to students and volunteers from the community who are interested in theater arts as well.

The goals of The Arc's theater program are to achieve the following results:

  • To increase community awareness regarding the artistic potential of persons with disabilities
  • To promote participation by and acceptance of these individuals in community arts programs
  • To foster development of self-confidence and self-esteem, through innovative programming that affords people with disabilities an opportunity to function as peers in creative arts programs along side other members of their community

Arts' programming helps people with disabilities:

  • Develop communication skills by allowing individuals to enhance existing or discover totally new methods of expression
  • Develop self-esteem and self-confidence as individuals explore and discover new interests, skills, and talents
  • Develop relationships and practice socialization skills such as teamwork, independence, personal responsibility, listening and conflict resolution
  • Develop cognitive skills including judgement, paying attention, decision making, coping skills, memory and attention, and self-organization
